Items That Movers Won’t Put On The Truck

Packing your boxes for movers for a move from West Palm Beach is very common. In fact, most people not moving through a corporate moving program with their employer will complete some if not all of their packing.

Typically, movers will be very willing to take any items from the home, including things from your garage. However, there are some basic items you may not realize that moving companies prohibit on their trucks, and it is important to know these restrictions and follow the guidelines provided.

When packing your home, ask the movers for a brochure, or where on their website you can find their full list of prohibited items. Carefully review the list before you start packing, and make sure anyone else packing boxes for or with you knows what needs to be moved separately.

Flammables, Explosives, and Hazardous Materials

Movers will not move anything that is considered flammable, hazardous or explosive. As a homeowner, you may be thinking you don’t have those types of materials, but you have them all over your home.

Here is a non-inclusive list of basic household items that fall into these categories:

  • Paint, paint thinner, paint remover, stains or sealants
  • Nail polish remover
  • Corrosive materials including any types of acids
  • Batteries of all types except gel batteries (check with the mover)
  • Ammunitions
  • Gasoline, kerosene, diesel, lighter fluid
  • Fertilizers
  • Charcoal and other types of solid fuels
  • Fire extinguishers

Most companies will move small types of equipment such as lawn mowers and weed eaters, or even motorcycles, but they have to be drained of all gas or fuel.

Plants or Pets

While this may sound obvious, movers will not move indoor or outdoor plants, usually even with local moves in West Palm Beach. There is too much risk of the plant falling and causing damage to other items from the soil and water. Additional, with long moves, plants simply don’t survive, and this creates problems.

Pets, even pets like snakes or other reptiles that may be caged or in terrariums or aquariums will not be moved. These can be shipped by other means or taken with you in your vehicle.

Perishable Food Items

Canned foods or foods otherwise preserved such as unopened jarred food items can go on the truck. However, keep in mind that movers don’t recommend this if you are moving at a time of the year or to a location where there may be freezing temperatures.

If you have any questions for your West Palm Beach movers about what to pack, don’t hesitate to call and ask, that is what the customer support department is for.
