John Hopkins Medicine reports that diagnostic errors are the number one reason or malpractice claims, over surgical mistakes and medication overdoses. It accounts for a great portion of the claims, leading to critical harm in patients. It also has the highest total of penalty payouts, said the report, with about 38.8 billion between 1986 and 2010.
