How To Get Grease Stains Out Of Your Clothes

When you are outside working on your car, and you get used oil or old grease on your clothes, it can leave an unsightly stain that can be difficult to get out. Professional maintenance workers are all too familiar with this problem as well since grease build up on pretty much everything in an industrial setting over time. Knowing how to remove these stains can save you not only time, but money, from replacing clothes and dry cleaning bills.

Don’t Dry It

This needs to be established early, even though it is not chronological. Once you run a stained piece of clothing through the dryer, the stain in not likely to come out. While it may be possible, once it has set from the heat of the dryer, the stain is pretty much guaranteed to be permanent, so don’t dry whatever you are trying to get the stains out of until you have completely removed it.

Breaking It Up

Once you have gotten rid of as much as you can, mix a little bit of dish soap and water, then put a few drops onto the stain and scrub it with a toothbrush. After you have worked out as much of the stain as you can, machine wash it and let it air dry. This will let you see if it came out or is still there. If it is still there, try again until it is completely removed.

Additional Tip

If you are working with old, dirty grease, you may have issues getting the color out even if you get all the grease out. In this case, scrub a small amount of petroleum jelly onto the spot and rub it in. Once you have done this let it soak for a few hours, then machine wash. You may have to repeat the earlier steps to remove the petroleum jelly, but this should help lift the dirt out of your clothing.

This is one of the easiest and most effective methods of removing grease from your clothes. If, however, you want to prevent stains instead of treating them then you should invest in a jumpsuit. You can find disposable work jumpsuits for men and women online.
