Around 50 years ago, AODD pump technology came into existence and since the it has been solving some of the most challenging applications. For unloading and transfer applications, AODD pump fits the best, but it can also be used for a wide range of other applications.
For example, waste water treatments are on a rise owing to stringent pollution norms coming into the picture as they serve the need of ETP- Effluent treatment Plants. Filter press is a key area in these water treatment areas, especially the filter press feed pump. It’s a tricky application, initially when filter press is empty the discharge pressure or the back pressure from the filter press is minimal.
The pump used for feeding finds it easier to deliver the required flow but as the filter press starts filling up the back pressure also increases. This is where the role of Sandpiper AODD pump becomes crucial to get the dry cake & remove the moisture in filter press. Sandpiper is one of the leading manufacturers of air operated double diaphragm pumps.
Normally filter press feed pumps use centrifugal or screw pump technology. With an increase in filter press back pressure, there is a decrease in flow rate of centrifugal pump & in screw pump the rpm needs to be adjusted to maintain the desired flow rate. This makes the use of PRV (Pressure Relief Valve) mandatory as filter press filled-up completely the pump will still keep on building the pressure.
This is where the AODD pump makes the difference.
The pump adjusts itself to increase in back pressure & once the filter press is filled up completely the pump stops automatically, which is highly unlikely in other pumping technologies. PRV is hence not required in AODD pump.
This application also needs a better abrasion-resistant pump due to solids present in the liquid (waste water). Also, a plus point for AODD pumps is their solid handling capability. In other pumping technologies the maintenance cost of consumables like – mechanical seal, impeller, casing, rotor, stator etc., is high with frequency of consumption. In AODD pump it’s just the diaphragms which are consumables thus bringing down the MTTR & MTBF cost.
Nowadays AODD are available with ‘Flaps’ instead of check balls. This helps in handling line size solids further increasing the life of consumables. Also it can be used where solid size is higher.
The two crucial areas where AODD helps are :
- Reduction in overall filter press feeding time &
- Bringing down the overall maintenance cost
