5 Tips for Choosing a Great Moving Company in New Orleans

by | Feb 23, 2016 | Moving & Storage

It can be difficult to choose a great moving company. New Orleans is home to many companies, but it’s vital to choose one that’s professional, experienced and offers a variety of services.

Here are some tips when evaluating a moving company:

Check Their Experience
Experience really does count as a track record. If they can stay in business for a long period of time, they are doing something right. Also look into their licensing and insurance. You can check this through the U.S. Department of Transportation. Never use a moving company without a license number or insurance, this puts you and your belongings at risk.

See What Their Rates Include
Sometimes it’s easy to be tricked by a low rate. Just like airlines, rates vary based on season and days of the week. See if the company will give you a better price on a weekday or during the middle of the month. Also ask questions about fuel and distance surcharges. Do your research online and come up with three companies from which to request estimates.

Ensure They Have the Right Moving Supplies
You might be able to buy boxes, packing tape and containers from the relocation company ahead of time. Also, remember to order the supplies you will need that day like plastic or foam wrap, different types of dollies such as those for furniture or appliances and any special electronic boxes for items such as televisions. Otherwise, the company may perform the packing for you – this can save you a lot of time.

Packing Yourself? Get Your Own Insurance
If you’ve chosen to pack yourself, consider purchasing your own moving or relocation insurance. Unless you’re paying the movers to pack your belongings, it’s not likely they will be insured against breakage caused by improper packing. While the moving company is typically liable for a certain dollar amount, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Ask Questions
When all else fails, ask! Go over your contract to make sure it covers all rates and charges, date and time for pick-up and delivery, proper addresses, claims protection and mover’s liability for your possessions. Read it carefully and if you have any questions call the moving company and ask. If their customer service isn’t great and you feel uncomfortable, something probably isn’t right and they may not be the agency for you.
