Why Monthly Self Breast Exams Are Important

1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Chances are you know someone who has had or currently has breast cancer in Oklahoma City. It is right behind lung cancer as the second leading cause of death among women. But with the proper diagnosis and treatment, it does not have to be a death sentence. The key is early detection. That means getting regular breast exams and mammograms. When you go in for your yearly pap smear, your doctor will most likely perform a breast exam on you. This is different from a mammogram in that it does not use imaging. The doctor will simply feel your breasts for lumps or firm tissue on your breast or near your underarm. If a lump is found, it does not automatically mean it is cancer. Many tumors are benign which means they are not cancerous at all. Many of them just turn out to be cysts.

In addition to getting regular breast exams by your doctor, you should also give them to yourself. You can do this by lying flat on your back. Put one hand behind your head. With the other hand, move your fingertips in circular motions up and down the sides of your breast by your armpit. Be sure to cover every area of your breast feeling for any lumps or hard tissue. Do the same thing with the other breast. Pay careful attention to what they feel like so you can notice any difference the next time you perform a self examination. It is a good idea to give yourself a breast exam at least once a month. The best time to do this is about a week after your menstrual cycle. For more detailed instructions on how to perform a breast exam you can ask your gynecologist. It’s important that you do the examination correctly and thoroughly. If you feel any abnormalities, get to your doctor right away.

The doctor can perform a mammogram and this will help diagnose the presence of breast cancer in Oklahoma City. Once again, the tumor may just turn out to be a benign cyst but it is always better to get it checked than to shrug it off.

Women who are over the age of 40 should get a mammogram at least once every year. If you are under the age of 40 but have certain breast cancer risks or have a history in the family of breast cancer, you too may want to get regular mammograms. With early detection and the right type of treatment, you can be free of breast cancer in Oklahoma City and go on to resuming a normal, healthy life.
